WordPress SEO: how to set up a WordPress site that ranks
WordPress SEO starts with a handful of settings most sites get wrong at launch: making sure search engines are allowed to index the site, using readable permalinks, adding an SEO plugin for titles, descriptions and schema, and keeping the site fast. WordPress powers more websites than any other system, over 40% of all sites according to W3Techs, and it is perfectly capable of ranking well. Most WordPress SEO problems come from configuration, heavy themes and too many plugins.
Is WordPress good for SEO?
Yes. WordPress produces clean, crawlable HTML, lets you control every title, heading and URL, and has a core XML sitemap built in since version 5.5 in 2020. Its strength for SEO is content: publishing and organising guides, case studies and service pages is what it was built for.
The weaknesses come from how it is used. Page builders and multipurpose themes can add large amounts of code, plugins can conflict or slow the site, and default archive pages can create thin duplicates. A custom-built WordPress theme avoids most of this, which is why it is our default for content-led business sites.
Which WordPress settings matter for SEO?
| Setting | Where to find it | What to set |
|---|---|---|
| Search engine visibility | Settings > Reading | Untick 'Discourage search engines' at launch |
| Permalinks | Settings > Permalinks | Post name, for readable URLs |
| Site title and tagline | Settings > General | Your brand name; replace the default tagline |
| Attachment pages | SEO plugin settings | Redirect to the file or parent post |
| Tag archives | SEO plugin settings | Noindex if they are thin |
The first row causes more WordPress SEO disasters than anything else. Developers tick 'Discourage search engines from indexing this site' while building, and it is forgotten at launch. The setting tells search engines not to index the site, and pages can stay out of Google until someone notices.
How do you set up WordPress SEO step by step?
- Check search engine visibility is allowed in Settings > Reading.
- Set permalinks to Post name before you publish content, so you do not have to redirect URLs later.
- Install one SEO plugin, such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math, to manage title tags, meta descriptions, canonical tags, schema and the XML sitemap. Running two SEO plugins at once causes conflicting tags.
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap your SEO plugin generates.
- Write a unique title and meta description for every important page, with the primary keyword near the start of the title.
- Structure each page with headings: one H1, then H2s for the main sections. In the block editor, choose heading levels for structure, not for font size.
- Control thin archives. Noindex tag archives and author archives on single-author sites if they add nothing. WordPress 6.4 disabled attachment pages for new installs; older sites should redirect them.
- Add internal links from new posts to the relevant service pages and from older posts to new ones.
How do you make a WordPress site fast?
Speed on WordPress comes from a few decisions. Choose hosting with server-level caching and a recent PHP version. Use a lightweight theme or a custom one. Serve images at the size they display, in modern formats: WordPress has supported WebP uploads since version 5.8 and AVIF since 6.5, and lazy-loads images by default. Audit plugins and remove any you do not use, because each one can add scripts and database queries.
Then measure with PageSpeed Insights, focusing on the field data for Core Web Vitals rather than the lab score alone. Our guide on what makes a website fast explains each factor.
Should you choose WordPress or a custom build?
WordPress suits most content-led business sites, especially where your team will publish regularly. A fully custom build in HTML or a framework such as Next.js suits sites that need unusual functionality, very high performance or a design no theme can deliver. We build custom WordPress sites as well as HTML and Next.js builds, and the right choice depends on who will run the site after launch and what it needs to do. Our web design team can talk it through, and our WordPress SEO service plans search into the build from day one.
