Shopify vs WooCommerce for SEO: which is better for your store?

By WebBox Team · Published 9 October 2026
Short answer

In the Shopify vs WooCommerce SEO comparison, neither platform ranks better by default. Shopify handles the technical basics for you, including hosting, SSL, sitemaps and canonical tags, but fixes parts of the URL structure. WooCommerce, the free ecommerce plugin for WordPress, gives you full control of URLs, code and content, but its speed and security depend on your hosting and plugins. The right choice depends on your catalogue, your team and how much content you plan to publish.

How do Shopify and WooCommerce differ for SEO?

Shopify is a hosted platform: you pay a subscription and Shopify runs the servers, security, SSL certificate and content delivery network. WooCommerce is open-source software that turns a WordPress site into a shop. You choose the host, the theme and the plugins, and you are responsible for keeping them fast and up to date.

That difference shapes everything else. Shopify trades flexibility for a reliable baseline. WooCommerce gives you a blank canvas, which is an advantage in skilled hands and a risk without them.

What are Shopify's SEO limitations?

The best known is the URL structure. Products always sit under /products/, collections under /collections/ and pages under /pages/, and the prefixes cannot be removed. This rarely stops a store ranking, but it limits how you design URLs.

The second is duplicate product URLs. A product reached through a collection can appear at /collections/name/products/item as well as /products/item. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing at the main product URL, but some themes still link internally to the collection version, which wastes crawling and splits signals. Check your theme and link to the canonical URL.

Apps are the third. Each app can add scripts to every page, and a store with dozens of apps can fail Core Web Vitals regardless of theme. Remove apps you no longer use and check that their code goes with them.

What are WooCommerce's SEO risks?

Performance is the main one. A WooCommerce store on cheap shared hosting, with a heavy theme and many plugins, can be slow on mobile, and Google measures speed through Core Web Vitals on real visits. Good hosting, caching, optimised images and a lean theme fix most of it.

Maintenance is the other. WordPress core, WooCommerce, the theme and every plugin need updating, and an outdated plugin is a common route for hacks that inject spam pages. Plan who owns updates before launch.

How do you set up ecommerce SEO on either platform?

  1. Plan categories around search demand. Collection and category pages often target the most valuable keywords, so build them from keyword research, not just stock structure.
  2. Write unique product descriptions. Manufacturer copy appears on every retailer's site. Add your own detail, sizing, use cases and answers to common questions.
  3. Control filter URLs. Filters for size, colour and price can create thousands of near-duplicate URLs. Google's guidance on faceted navigation suggests keeping filter URLs you do not need in search out of crawling.
  4. Add Product structured data. Price, availability and reviews make products eligible for rich results and help with free listings through Google Merchant Center.
  5. Handle out-of-stock and discontinued products. Keep temporarily unavailable products live and marked as out of stock. Redirect discontinued ones to the closest alternative.

Which should you choose for SEO?

Choose Shopify if you want a reliable store with little technical upkeep and your growth will come mainly from products and categories. Choose WooCommerce if content is central to your marketing, you need full control of URLs and templates, or your store needs custom functionality. We build on both, and on custom Next.js front ends for stores that outgrow either.
